This is a new initiative so please bear with me (I will add more applications each day and week!).
Below I have added links and short blurbs of iPad Apps that I feel would be helpful to teachers in the classroom.
They are arranged (for now) in alphabetical order. I have also indicated if these apps are FREE or PAID.
Dictionary.com - FREE App
- Great resource for teachers and students alike
- Does not require you to be online for most searches
- Includes a thesaurus
- Keeps a record of your previous searches
Doodle Buddy - FREE App
- Great for Pre-K but has its uses for older children as well
- Simple and easy to use
- Allows children to color in stencils or participate in free-hand drawing and doodling
Dropbox - FREE App
- Brilliant application
- Requires you to register for a free account and install a similar free application on your MAC or PC
- You can then drop files (of any kind) into a folder on your desktop and have it available to you on your iPad
- I have used this to keep pictures that I want to show my students as well as PDF documents (works like a charm!)
Expedition - PAID App
- On the iPad, there is no function to project what you see on your Safari browser onto a projector screen (VGA/Composite)
- This application fills that gap and allows you to project a website (basically anything that is available online)
- This is great when you need to show students or colleagues a website, blog, wiki in class
iAnnotate PDF - PAID App
- Though not free, this is a very useful application for anyone who does not like to carry alot of paper
- Great way to review PDFs online, give comments, highlight and save or email them
- What I do is scan documents and keep them in my DROPBOX so I can access them from my iPad
- Useful when you have readings, lesson plans, schemes of work, syllabus guides and other stuff that you would appreciate having close by
Office HD - PAID App
- Cheaper than Quickoffice but comes with similar features
- Not as intuitive and easy to use
- Screen is quite cluttered but it gets the job done
- Similar to quickoffice in lacking advanced features to edit a PPT file
Penultimate - PAID App
- Still the best handwriting application for the iPad
- I would suggest using it with a stylus (just because its easier to write with one)
- Very intuitive and sensitive to the touch
- Supports multiple "notebooks" and colors
- After using this, I don't need my paper notebook anymore
- Allows emailing and saving of notes as PDFs
- Great for discussions and meetings
Popplet - (lite version is FREE)
- AMAZING application!
- A must have!
- Basically an intuitive mindmapping application that allows you to also doodle or add images into your maps
- The paid version allows you to project these maps onto a projector screen
- Great classroom use to facilitate student discussions, capture the essence of a topic, as a trigger or review of what you have covered in class
- Students can also come up to the front and use the app on your (or their) iPads!
Quickoffice HD - PAID App
- Allows you to edit MS Office documents on your iPad
- Easy and intuitive to use
- Lacks advanced features to edit a PPT file
- Does not have any ability to project what you have on the iPad
- Would be useful for minor edits of documents you receive by email
Sadun's Whiteboard - PAID App
- Allows you to transform your iPad into a presentation screen
- You can then draw on your iPad and have your doodle/writing be displayed on a TV or Projector
- Fantastic for classroom use as it enables you to save your doodles or email them
- This will give you a record of what you write (as opposed to a chalk board or static whiteboard)
Splashtop Remote Desktop - PAID App
- This is an incredible breakthrough
- This application is a remote desktop application that allows you access to your PC or MAC from your iPad
- This application only works over a Wireless network (your PC or MAC must be on the SAME network as your iPad)
- Stable and very intuitive
- Allows you to run applications from the iPad that may only work on the PC or MAC (such as flash video or some games)
- Also absolves you from having to save documents onto your iPad
